ROVERS SIGN LEE NICHOLLS ON LOAN

11 September 2015

Keeper arrives on loan!

Bristol Rovers have today completed the loan signing of Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Lee Nicholls.

The shot stopper has signed on loan for 93 days subject to the necessary paperwork being completed and goes straight into the squad to face one of his former clubs, Accrington Stanley, on Saturday.

The 22 year old signed scholarship forms with Wigan in 2009 and after making his first senior appearance for the club in an FA Cup tie against Hull City in January 2010, he signed his first professional contract with the Latics.

Loan spells at Hartlepool, Shrewsbury and Sheffield Wednesday in the 2010/11 season followed, and he signed a loan deal with Accrington in February 2012, going on to appear in nine league games for them.

A season long loan with Northampton Town in 2012/13 saw him ever present between the posts at Sixfields and since returning to his parent club he has appeared in seven league games.

The U-19 England international replaces Aaron Chapman who has now returned to Chesterfield, his parent club.

Speaking of his new signing manager Darrell Clarke said; “He’s a player I’ve been interested in signing for a while as we heard that he might be available for a loan move at some point.

“He’s an experienced keeper, having played a full season for Northampton and appearing in a play off final for them.

“Last season he appeared in the Europa League for Wigan and he’s a little bit more experienced than Aaron, who has done well for us during his time here.

“I would like to thank Aaron for his efforts whilst he has been with us and he returns to Chesterfield with our best wishes.”

Chairman Nick Higgs said; “Lee arrives at the club with a successful loan spell at Northampton behind him and experience of playing first team football for Wigan. I would like to welcome him to the club and wish him every success during his time at The Memorial Stadium.”
