Arguably one of the most stylish strikers to pull on a Rovers shirt in recent times, Marcus began his playing career with Rovers and went on to score 51 goals in 171 league appearances before a move to Huddersfield Town in 1996.

A move to Ipswich saw him appear in the Premiership and UEFA Cup and from Portman Road it was on to Sunderland where he scored 31 goals in 102 league appearances.

He moved back to Bristol in 2005, to Bristol City, and whilst at Ashton Gate he spent loan spells at Preston North End and Yeovil Town before joining the Glovers on a permanent basis.

In July 2008 he moved again, to Exeter City and during three years as a player at St James' Park he notched up the 250th league goal of his career.

His final game for the Grecians was a league match against Rovers, at the Memorial Stadium, in April 2011.

He had already undertaken coaching duties for Exeter and in 2012 he returned to Rovers as Development Coach, under Mark McGhee. He remained in that role when his former boss, John Ward, returned for a second spell in charge of the club.

Ward left Rovers in the summer of 2014 and Darrell Clarke moved quickly to appoint Marcus as his assistant, the announcement of his appointment being made on 1st July 2014.
