It was during his time at Rugby Park that the goalkeeper made his first appearance for the Finnish national side, making his international debut against Sweden, the first of three senior caps to date.

In 2013, Jaakkola headed to South Africa to feature for Ajax Cape Town, spending a three-year spell and tallying over 70 appearances.

During the 2018/19 campaign, Anssi featured 16 times in all competitions for the Royals, before departing the Madejski at the end of his deal.

Following his move to the Gas in 2019, Jaakkola impressed heavily, earmarked as one of the players of the 2019/20 campaign. An unstoppable performance away from home against Plymouth Argyle, in the FA Cup 2nd Round, was a highlight of his season, pulling off a number of miraculous saves.

Shortly after that game, Jaakkola's 2019/20 season was cut short following a serious shoulder injury on New Year's day against Mk Dons, he played 26 times for the Gas in his first campaign at the Mem.

Following his recovery from the setback, and his return to training, Jaakkola was given a contract extension in July 2020, seeing him secure a further two-year stay with the club, accompanied by an option for a third.

Jaakkola was selected to join the Finland Euro 2020 squad in the summer of 2021.
