It was with Northampton Town where Hughes secured his first consistent spell of football, playing over 100 games for the Cobblers at League One level.

Moves between Walsall, Bury and Morecambe followed for the Merseyside-born defender, who was ever-present throughout League One and Two.

Hughes also has a promotion from League Two on his CV, playing over 50 games for Accrington Stanley in their 2017-18 promotion campaign, notching four crucial goals along the way.

His consistent run that season forms part of a spell at Accrington Stanley lasting over 200 league games since January 2016. This included an impressive feat in the 2020/21 campaign, playing every minute of the condensed season up until the final game of March, where he was forced off through injury, a run of 36 games up to that point.

Hughes forms part of the first flurry of signings under Joey Barton, as the Rovers manager looks to make his mark ahead of the upcoming League Two season.
