Match Preview: Charlton Athletic v Rovers

23 November 2018

No time to dwell for Darrell Clarke's men following Wednesday night's disappointment, as they return to league action

It was a hard one to swallow for Rovers in midweek as they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Barnet at the Mem in their first-round replay, four days after losing to the same scoreline at home to Scunthorpe United.

Goals have been the problem for the Gas and despite having 35 shots in their last two games, they have only netted twice; the silver lining in a bleak week for the boys in blue and white was Tom Nichols breaking his goalscoring duck on Wednesday.

Positivity can be taken from the sheer dominance of Rovers against Scunthorpe United and Barnet, who only managed a combined seven shots on target, four of which ended up in the back of the net - that tells you much of the current story at BS7.

More optimism can also be shed from the last league away day, an excellent 3-0 win at Blackpool thanks to goals from Ollie Clarke (2) and Tony Craig.

A win at The Valley on Saturday could lift Rovers from an uncomfortable 21st position up to a, slightly less, uncomfortable 18th and onto 20 points, other results pending.

The Gaffer's View: Darrell Clarke touched on some key topics in his pre-match presser, after a difficult week for the club.

Opposition: Charlton are exactly where they finished last season, in sixth place. In their last five league games they've picked up 10 points, only losing to Rochdale at the end of October, however their last three fixtures have all been cup action. Following a 1-1 FA Cup draw at Mansfield they took their League Two opponents back to The Valley nine days later where they made no mistake on the second time of asking, putting five past the Stags and keeping a clean sheet. In between that they lost 1-0 in the Checkatrade Trophy to Rovers' knockout opponents Swansea City Under-21s. Defensively the Addicks have been very sound of late, shipping just four goals in their last nine games in all competitions.

Last Time We Met: Back in April this year, the promotion-chasing Addicks came to the Mem hoping to firm up their spot in play-offs under the guidance of recently appointed Caretaker boss Lee Bowyer, but didn't get off to the ideal start. Kyle Bennett capitalised on a slack back pass to prod home past Ben Amos just past the 20-minute mark, but Ben Reeves equalised for the visitors on the stroke of half-time to ensure the afternoon's shares were spoiled.

Tickets: Advanced ticket for this fixture are now unavailable, however fans can purchase on the day at the ground from 1pm at an increased price - more details below.
