Rovers World Cup Connections: Panama

8 June 2018

With the World Cup about to begin in Russia, we look at connections between Bristol Rovers Football Club and the 32 participating countries.

In some cases these connections are strong and multiple; in others they are tenuous, at best. Panama are competing in their first World Cup Finals and are in England's group.

He Played against Panama

It hardly needs to be said that no Panamanian has appeared for Rovers; barely any players from the small Central American country have played professionally in Europe and connections with the country are few.

However, Rovers' supporters need look no further than their club captain for a tenuous link with England's World Cup opponents.

It was against Panama in November 2017 that Tom Lockyer won his first full Welsh cap, replacing Ben Davies at half time in a match which finished 1-1.

Lockyer has been a stalwart member of Rovers' side for many years, although he is still only 23, and has played in 163 (+8) Football League games, scoring twice as well as adding 44 matches and a goal in the Conference campaign of 2014/15.

The Trinidadian Connection

There was recent news that the former Rovers full back Kevin Austin has been fighting serious illness and all supporters wish him well with this.

Born in Hackney in December 1973, Austin was with Rovers between 2002 and 2004, playing in 52 (+4) League matches without scoring.

In addition, in deference to his parental background, he won a solitary cap for Trinidad and Tobago in November 2000 in a 1-0 victory over Panama.

The only goal that day was a penalty after 27 minutes, converted by Nigel Pierre, another former Rovers player. Pierre won 55 caps in all for Trinidad, three of these games coming against Panama.

He had scored on his international début in October 1999, a 2-2 draw against Panama and he played in 1 (+2) League games with The Gas in 2000 and 2001.
