"I'm glad to get everything sorted off the pitch so I can get back to my best on it."

Skipper Tom Lockyer put pen to paper on a new deal with Rovers this morning, and is now looking forward to focusing on his football.

Tom has already racked up an impressive 221 appearances for the club but is keen to rediscover the consistency that saw him amass the majority of those over the last four seasons.

With his contract now signed and sealed, that's something the Welsh international is now confident of.

"The most important thing for me is to get back to my best and that's to sign a new deal and put everything off the pitch to one side and concentrate on my football." Tom told the club.

"I think this season I've had patches whereas in previous years I've been pretty consistent and that's something I'll strive to get back to."

Despite being aged just 23, the defender already has a wealth of experience and a cool head on his shoulders which is why he was named captain by Darrell Clarke following the club's return to the Football League.

It's a responsibility Tom has taken in his stride and is proud to harbour.

"It's a massive honour, from the first time I put the armband on I knew there was something special about it and when you get to lead the team out in front of all the fans home and away it's a brilliant feeling and I hope it continues."

The contract adds to what's already been an eventful season from Tom, with the Welshman making his 200th apperance for the club in August and then making his debut for the Wales senior team in November last year.

Coming on as a half-time substitute in a friendly against Panama at the Cardiff City Stadium, "Locks" spoke on how much it meant to him.

"It meant a lot to me and my family, it's something that can't be taken away from me, that I'll always have and cherish.
