Bristol Rovers 0-1 Newport County

Our U-18 side slipped to a third consecutive defeat when losing 1-0 to Newport last Saturday and there was more bad news as striker Blake Davies was sent off for the second successive game.

“When we looked back at the DVD of the game against AFC Bournemouth the previous week, the red card that Blake picked up in that game appeared to be a little bit unfortunate,” said Youth Team manager Alan Walsh.

“On this occasion, however, there are no complaints about his sending off for retaliation which means he now faces a long time on the sidelines.”

Alan’s side didn’t get off to the best of starts, conceding the only goal of the game after just four minutes.

“Our inability to keep the ball and to clear our lines cost us dearly. The goal arrived following some play down our left hand side and when the ball was crossed into our box it was cleared straight to a Newport player, 25 yards from goal. He controlled it and struck a shot that beat goalkeeper Charlie Phillips and struck the underside of the crossbar before hitting the back of the net.

“It was a disappointing goal to concede and even more disappointing was the fact that we didn’t react afterwards and our first half performance was very poor.

“Blake’s red card came on 38 minutes and we saw the first half out before regrouping for the second period.

“Credit is due to the lads, who put in a much better second half performance, as we looked much more threatening than we had in the opening 45 minutes. Newport broke away on a couple of occasions, and might have added further goals, but we kept the ball much better with ten men than we had in the first half with 11. We also created a lot more opportunities and our ball retention was much better.

“Having gone just over a year undefeated in league games, we have now lost three on the spin and we simply have to work through it and be better in all aspects of our play. We will work hard in training as we look to overcome our losing habit.”
