ON THIS DAY - 2012

17 March 2015

Bristol Rovers 1-0 AFC Wimbledon

Referee – Mike Dean
Attendance – 5,828

On this Day in 2012 a brilliant solo goal from Mustapha Carayol earned Bristol Rovers all three points against AFC Wimbledon on an appalling Memorial Stadium pitch.

The winger received the ball just inside the Don’s half, cut inside from the left hand side and calmly slotted the ball past Seb Brown from the edge of the penalty area.

It was one-way traffic in the first half as Rovers bombarded the Wimbledon goal in heavy rain with Matt Gill going closest on 33 minutes.

Wimbledon pressed for that all-important equalising goal in the second half and efforts from George Moncur and Sammy Moore forced fine saves from Rovers keeper Scott Bevan.

Chris Zebroski had two efforts for the home side in the second period and Danny Woodard’s almost doubled Rovers lead but his shot went the wrong side of the post after zipping off the wet pitch.

Both sides had chances but neither tested the opposition keeper however both sides deserved credit for producing a game of any quality in increasingly difficult conditions.

Rovers: Scott Bevan; Danny Woodards, Tom Parkes, Cian Bolger, Lee Brown (Michael Smith – 69); Jim Paterson, Craig Stanley, Mustapha Carayol (Eliot Richards – 75), Matt Gill; Chris Zebroski, Matt Harrold.

AFC Wimbledon: Seb Brown; Pim Balkestein, Mat Mitchel-King, Sam Hatton, Gareth Gwillim; George Moncur, Toks Yussuff (Luke Moore – 87), Billy Knott (Kieron Djilali – 74), Sammy Moore; Jason Euell (Christian Jolley – 58), Jack Midson.
