Torquay United 2-4 Bristol Rovers

Sat 17th January 2015

Goals from Blake Davies (2), Tyler Lyttle and Elliott Green enabled Rovers to beat their Torquay United counterparts 4-2 on Saturday.

Youth Team Manager Alan Walsh had this to say afterwards; “We did well especially in the first half, when we scored all of our goals and came close to adding two or three more.

“We started brightly on a poor playing surface, which cut up quite badly as the game went on, but we coped with the conditions very well.

“The first goal came after eight minutes following a goalmouth scramble after a corner and Tyler Lyttle applied the finishing touch.

“We soon doubled our lead after a run down the left by Ryan Broom. He cut inside and shot, but the ball was deflected as far as Blake Davies who slotted home.

“Blake scored again on 25 minutes and we created a number of other opportunities to add to our lead shortly afterwards.

“Goalkeeper Kieran Preston did make one fairly comfortable save, and dealt competently with a few crosses into his box, but other than that he had little to do.

“We managed to score again before the break and it was probably the best one of the game. A free kick was swung in from the left and headed clear by a Torquay defender as far as Elliott Green, who was on the edge of the area, and he found the back of the net with a superb volley.”

Alan asked his side for more of the same in the second half, but warned them that Torquay would have heard some strong words from their management team during the half time interval and would come out with all guns blazing at the start of the half.

He was proved right; “Torquay pulled a goal back within two minutes of the restart following our failure to deal with a corner, and four minutes later they scored again.

“We were under a little bit of pressure after that but we weathered the storm and created one or two more goalscoring opportunities ourselves before the final whistle.

“Overall, we did very well to play a decent standard of football on a very poor pitch and our first half performance, in particular, was outstanding.”
