ON THIS DAY - 2006

1 April 2015

By Jimi Brock

Wycombe Wanderers 1-3 Bristol Rovers
Attendance: 6,355 (960)

On Saturday the 1st of April 2006 Wycombe Wanderers and Bristol Rovers played out in a win for the gas 3-1. The goal scorers that day included a Junior Agogo double and a penalty that was converted by Richard Walker, with the Wanderers’ goal coming from a certain Jermaine Easter.

It was a win that saw the Gas move to with an outside chance at the time of sneaking into the playoffs. It was Junior Agogo who got the scoring underway after his 30th minute shot cannoned in off the post after Mike Williamson, now of Newcastle United, misjudged his header.

The most controversial moment of the game came when Rovers’ keeper Scott Shearer, who would go on to play 63 games for the Chairboys, let the ball slip and scooped if off the line but the Wanderers’ appeal for a goal fell on deaf ears.

It got better for the Gas when Mike Williamson brought down Craig Disley in the 53 minute and former Wanderer Richard Walker tucked away the resulting penalty. Rovers scored another 12 minutes later but was disallowed after a Sammy Igoe tap in was ruled off for offside.

The man of the day though, Junior Agogo, finished the game with a brace after scoring from an incisive breakaway on the 74th minute. Wycombe did fashion a goal of their own, though merely a consolation it was scored by current Rovers frontman Jermaine Easter as he netted his first goal for the Chairboys in the 81st minute of the game.

Rovers head coach at the time was Paul Trollope who said after the game “both sides showed they were going for it, you could see that when they hit the post after a couple of minutes”.

Another man who played for the Wycombe side that would later go on to play for Rovers was Danny Senda who made 16 appearances for the gas in 2011.
