Rovers welcome Chelsea U21 to the Mem in the Papa John's Trophy on Wednesday evening!
Rovers head into the match against Chelsea U21's off the back of a 3-0 victory against Carlisle last Saturday. Below is all the essential info you need ahead of the game.
First Team Coach, Kevin Maher spoke to local press at the Quarters training ground on Tuesday morning. On the agenda was his opportunity to manage Rovers at the Mem as well as the younger players in the squad getting a taste of first-team action against Chelsea U21's.
Both Zain Walker and Kieran Phillips could be involved on Tuesday evening after the duo's loan deals expired at the weekend.
In their previous match in the Papa John's Trophy, Chelsea drew against Exeter 1-1 but did go on to be victorious in the penalty shoot-out which followed the game. In the Premier League 2 this season Chelsea have only won once so far this season from their opening seven league games. That solo win came in a 4-3 victory against Liverpool U21's with Lewis Hall scoring the match-winner in the 95th minute.
Rovers have faced Chelsea U21 two times in the Papa John's Trophy and have a perfect record against the Londoners in this competition. First in 2019 with rover coming away 2-1 winners at the Mem. In 2020 Rovers came up against Chelsea again winning a thrilling encounter 4-3 behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Rovers had led 3-1 during the match but the visitors drew level after two second-half goals. A superb stop from Jordi van Stappershoef kept Rovers in the game with the time ticking away before Josh Hare popped up with a late goal which gave Rovers the win.
Christopher Pollard is the man in the middle for Wednesday's fixture at the Mem. Pollard has officiated two games in the Papa John's Trophy this season, officiating the games between Forest Green Rovers and Northampton and MK Dons against Wycombe. Over those two games, Pollard dished out five yellow cards. In the 25 games Pollard took charge of last season between the Sky Bet League One and the Sky Bet League Two, Pollard handed out 83 yellow cards and 8 red cards.
EFL sponsors Sky Bet have Rovers priced at 12/1 to record a 2-0 victory on Wednesday evening.
