Manager's Preview: Barton on Hull City

Words from the opposition...

Ahead of the fixture, Hull City manager Grant McCann spoke to hullcitytigers.com on what he expected from his side's Saturday meeting with Rovers...

"Consistency and momentum are important, but we know that there will be plenty of ups and downs for every team over the next few weeks. We just need to make sure we remain calm and we're looking forward to this Saturday."

"Joey Barton has gone in at Bristol Rovers and his teams always play with high energy. It will be a tough fixture and we need to focus on what we're about."

Form Guide...

Following relegation from the Championship last season, many predicted Hull to be up towards the summit of the 2020/21 League One table, and indeed they are, sitting 2nd at present. Lead by former-Peterborough and Doncaster manager Grant McCann, Hull have remained consistent in the league this season. They've taken 10 points from their last five games in the league, which included a 5-0 thrashing of Wigan Athletic before meeting Doncaster Rovers and providing a hectic six-goal thriller, evenly split 3-3. A loss to Ipswich followed, but the Tigers reacted well to secure back to back wins with clean sheets afterwards, beating Wimbledon and Rochdale comfortably.

Referee Watch...

Sam Purkiss is the man in the middle on Saturday. In the 23 games he has officiated this season, there have been 54 yellow cards and 8 red cards. He officiated Rovers’ 2-0 home win over Northampton at the Mem back in October, giving out 5 yellow cards and sending off Joe Martin for two-yellow card offences for the Cobblers. Last season, he was In charge of our 3-0 defeat away at MK Dons on New Years’ Day.

Last Encounter...

The two sides met at the Mem back in October, where Hull claimed a 3-1 win. James Daly put Rovers ahead in the 2nd minute, as Rovers held the lead up until the hour mark. A triple change from Grant McCann sparked a recovery for Hull City, as all three substitutes went on to score. Keane Lewis-Potter levelled the scores before Regan Slater fired Hull into the lead in the 75th minute. Tom Eaves completed the scoring deep into stoppage time.

Around the grounds...

There are no proverbial 'six-pointers' this weekend towards the foot of the table, as none of the Gas' closest rivals face off against each other. Burton, Rovers' most recent opponents, host table-topping Peterborough United, while Swindon Town travel up to Accrington Stanley, who the Gas will host on Tuesday night next week. Elsewhere, Northampton welcome Portsmouth to town, and Wigan Athletic take on MK Dons at the DW Stadium. Of the other sides in the battle against relegation, AFC Rochdale hop on the bus and head to the North East, to take on Sunderland. AFC Wimbledon travel to the west coast, visting Blackpool.
