Match Preview: Bristol Rovers v Charlton Athletic

15 January 2021

After a week of cup appearances, focus returns to the league, with a home game against Charlton Athletic on the horizon...

It seems an age ago that Rovers came from behind to secure a winning start to 2021, thanks to goals from Sam Nicholson and Brandon Hanlan in the league against Blackpool. Two Cup games have come since, both defeats, but both valuable in what they provided.

The narrow defeat to Sheffield United in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup showed signs of the Gas' ability, running a Premier League outfit close over 90 minutes, while the Papa John's Trophy defeat to AFC Wimbledon offered Pual Tisdale the chance to assess the players on the periphery of his squad.

Opposition View...

Lee Bowyer sat down with the press ahead of his side's trip to the west, saying to "Saturday is going to be a tough game, they’ve had some good results this season and we’re going to have to match them physically.”

Form Guide...

Charlton Athletic featured in the only league encounter on Tuesday night, a dramatic 4-4 draw with Rochdale at the Valley after being 3-1 down inside half an hour. The result outlined the Addicks defensive frailties, the last time they conceded less than two goals was all the way back on the 5th of December. This struggle at the back has coincided with a dip in form, losing against Hull City and Accrington Stanley since the turn of the year.

Previous encounter...

The Gas' last outing against Charlton came in 2019, as Rovers fought valiantly to a 0-0 draw at the Mem against eventual promotion winners from the 2018/19 season.

It's a busy weekend of league action as many clubs return from cup action. Two of last year's promotion winners, Crewe Alexandra, and Plymouth Argyle go head to head on Saturday, a tie worth keeping an eye on as Crewe feature as the Gas' next opponents. An important fixture in the relegation scrap comes this weekend too, as 20th placed Rochdale take on 23rd placed Wigan Athletic, with just two points between the sides. In and around the Gas, Northampton Town in 19th, take on Oxford United.
