Match Preview: Charlton Athletic v Bristol Rovers

14 December 2020

Get the lowdown on the Gas' midweek trip to the capital...

Wins against AFC Wimbledon, Leyton Orient, and Plymouth Argyle have all contributed to an impressive start to Paul Tisdale's tenor, but a result on the road against the high-flying Charlton Athletic would be a real feather in Tisdale's flat-cap.

The goals on Saturday, two from set-pieces and one from Zain Westbrooke, highlighted Tisdale's ability to rectify the Gas' problems of the past, looking sharp from dead-ball situations, and helping Westbrooke find some phenomenal form in recent weeks.

A clean-sheet from Jordi Van Stappershoef was celebrated by the whole squad upon their return to the dressing-room after Argyle, with the Dutchman pulling off some spectacular saves to help the Gas to their 3-0 win.

Rovers now look ahead to a tricky away tie at the Valley...

Manager's Preview...

Following Saturday afternoon's victory over Argyle, Tisdale looked ahead to his side's midweek clash with Charlton Athletic, hear from the manager below...

Opposition View...

Lee Bowyer reflected on his side's 5-2 win over AFC Wimbledon on the weekend, speaking to cafc.co.uk discussing their comeback saying "At half-time, I was firm but fair with the players but there wasn't much for me to say, I wanted them to keep doing what they were doing."

Bowyer also spoke on the return of fans to the Valley, "It was excellent from start to finish and that's why we love playing here, even when we went behind they recognised it and they got us going again!"

Form Guide...

Charlton went and bettered the Gas' recent scoreline against AFC Wimbledon in their most fixture, beating their fellow-London side 5-2 at the Valley. Prior to that, the Addicks had endured a tricky run, first losing at home to MK Dons, before drawing against Shrewsbury Town on their travels due to a 95th-minute equaliser from the Salops.

Across their last 5 games, the Gas have the same points as Charlton, both taking seven points from their recent games, but the Addicks currently sit in the play-offs, only two points shy of an automatic promotion spot.

Previous Encounter...

The Addicks have enjoyed success against the Gas in many of their recent meetings, you'd have to go back to 2010 to find a victory for Rovers when the two sides clashed, goals from Steve Elliott and Paul Heffernan helped the Gas to a 2-1 victory on that occasion.

The most recent encounter came in March 2019, when Rovers ground out a valuable 0-0 draw against a promotion-bound Charlton side.

Around the grounds...

Our opposition for Saturday, Oxford United, meet with Northampton Town on Tuesday night at the Kassam Stadium hoping to build form ahead of the weekend encounter. League leaders Hull City travel across the UK to Blackpool for their midweek fixture, while Pompey host Fleetwood in an all-top-half fixture. Wimbledon, situated just one place and one point above the Gas at present, face a tricky trip to Sunderland.

Rovers could move to 14th if things go their way on Tuesday, intensifying a push for the top-half this side of the new year!
