Match Preview: Southend United v Rovers

1 February 2019

Rovers travel to Essex on Saturday afternoon, to take on 12th placed Southend United at Roots Hall in the SkyBet League One.

Graham Coughlan's men head east looking for a repeat of the positive display in midweek against Peterborough United, which saw the side come within minutes of taking all three points against the promotion candidates.

Unbeaten on the road in four games, Rovers know victory over the Shrimpers could lift them out of the drop zone and as high as 18th, if other results go their way.

Bradford City and Rochdale separate Rovers from the cusp of safety, both with two points more but having played an extra game.

The Gas are also boosted by the deadline day arrivals of midfielder Abu Ogogo and striker Jonson Clarke-Harris, both of whom joined the club following their release from Coventry City.

Manager's View: Coughlan addressed the press bright and early on the snowy Friday morning, just hours after wrapping up his deadline day business, to preview Saturday's encounter and discuss the new playing personnel.

Opposition: Southend occupy a comfortable mid-table berth in SkyBet League One and currently have a tally of 38 points. Last weekend, Chris Powell's side were narrowly beaten at home to Luton Town, as the Hatters climbed to the summit of the division with the three points at Roots Hall. Prior to that, they claimed an impressive 4-0 win at strugglers Bradford, however a week before were beaten 3-2 at home by Plymouth Argyle in a thrilling encounter. They were also knocked out of the Checkatrade Trophy at the start of the month, as they lost 2-0 to League One high-fliers Portsmouth.

Press Talk: United boss Chris Powell spoke to the press on Friday ahead of the game and is looking forward to facing Rovers boss and friend, Coughlan. Powell told Southend's website, “I know Graham well, we did one of our coaching badges together and that is when I really got to know him. We have kept in contact over the years, not just when he was here but if I was elsewhere he would come to watch games or ask about a player and I know from his time here - he is well liked at the club. It will be good to see him but ultimately he has a job to do and so do we."

Tickets: Advanced tickets are now off sale, but there will some available on the day.
