Match Preview: Rovers v Sunderland

22 February 2019

Rovers welcome promotion-seeking Sunderland to the Mem on Saturday afternoon, looking to edge closer to safety in Sky Bet League One.

Despite taking the lead and missing a penalty, Tuesday night's 1-1 draw at Portsmouth can be reflected on as a positive result, given Pompey's Championship aspirations.

It also extended Rovers unbeaten run in all competitions to five games and six away from home, with the side sat 19th in the league.

Victory over The Black Cats on the weekend could potentially lift Rovers to 17th and four points clear of the drop zone.

Manager's View: Graham Coughlan addressed the media at the training ground on Thursday morning, to preview Saturday's clash.

Opposition View: Jack Ross' side are well on course for at least a play-off spot, with aspirations for automatic promotion whilst they sit 3rd in the table. Their recent form however, hasn't been entirely convincing, with the Wearside club drawing three of their last five games, although most recently they did overcome Gillingham 4-2 at the Stadium of Light. Rovers may also take encouragement from the fact that Sunderland's last win away from home came on New Year's Day, a narrow 1-0 victory over Blackpool. In fact, those three points at Bloomfield Road is the only set they have picked up on their last seven road trips.
