The Development Squad booked a place in the quarter-final of the Gloucestershire Senior Challenge Cup, with a 4-1 victory over Bristol Manor Farm on Tuesday evening.
Despite actually falling behind after 12 minutes, Rovers soon took control and turned the game around, much to the delight of Manager Chris Hargreaves.
“It was a mature and clinical display, I thought the goals we scored were excellent and even though we were disappointed to go one down early on we reacted well in what was quite a tough game despite what the scoreline suggests,” Chris said.
“Great to advance to the next round and take on another senior side and the more games the merrier for these boys; we’d love two games a week but we just can’t do it.”
The game was played at a great intensity and emotions ran high with a number of robust tackles and confrontations occurring particularly in the second half, that Rovers did well to rise above, again something that pleased Hargreaves.
“Tempers did flare up a little bit and as a coach you just want to protect them from that, I suppose I got a bit annoyed but it’s very difficult for the officials with 22 players to manage, people on the touchline, however, I think you’ve got to be a bit sterner when it’s essentially a men’s team against our young lads, some as young as 17/18.
“Having said that it’ll only make them stronger as long as they don’t react to things because that’s when you’ll get sent off or booked; we had a few cases of dissent which I’m a bit annoyed about and will have a word with a few of the lads.
“All in all, I thought they stood up to some tasty challenges and just got on with their football by moving the ball quickly to help avoid that types of tackles.”
Strikers Deon Moore, Cameron Allen (2) and Cameron Ebbutt all got on the scoresheet, a real bonus for the confidence of Hargreaves’ attacking talent.
“All strikers want to score and can be obsessed with it but we just said to the front two before the game if you set the tone for the team, work hard as a pair, you will get your chances and tonight I thought they all took their goals really well.
“Great for Cam Ebbutt to get his too, moving up front in the second half after putting in a sterling effort at wing-back which he was out of position in but it’s good for his development.”
