Opposition View: Blackpool

2 November 2018

Take a closer look at Saturday's opponents Blackpool ahead of the SkyBet League One clash at Bloomfield Road.

Press Talk...

Terry McPhillips had a quick press turnaround following Blackpool's Carabao Cup game at Arsenal in midweek, but seemed keen to try and build on that positive display at The Emirates against Rovers on Saturday.

Speaking to blackpoolfc.co.uk, McPhillips said, "The boys had a really tough game on Wednesday night (against Arsenal) and probably covered more mileage than they would normally in a game.

"We rested yesterday (Thursday) and did some light training with those players who played midweek on Friday.

"They (Rovers) are well organised. I watched them against Rochdale a few weeks ago and they were well organised and hard to get past. They haven't been scoring a lot, but they don't concede a lot of goals either, so it should be a tight game on Saturday."

Recent Form...

Blackpool's form has been mixed of late, as it has been most of the season and is reflected in their league position as they sit dead in the middle at 12th. They've lost their last two games, however were by no means disgraced being defeated 2-1 by Premier League giants Arsenal in the Carabao Cup at The Emirates on Wednesday night after being edged out 3-2 away to local rivals Fleetwood Town the Saturday prior. The week before they overcame Scunthorpe United 1-0 at Bloomfield Road - they've only lost once there all season, to league leaders Portsmouth.

Star Man...

Jay Spearing is probably the most recognisable name amongst the Blackpool ranks, having played in England's top tier with Liverpool; the club where he rose through the youth ranks to go on to make 55 first team appearances and even lift the League Cup trophy in 2012. After four seasons at Bolton Wanderers with a year-loan spell at Blackburn Rovers wedged in between, Spearing moved on a free transfer to Bloomfield Road around this time last year. Since then he has barely missed a game, with the all-action midfielder making 53 appearances since. The Seasiders' captain has started this season well, chipping with three goals and two assists.
