Rovers World Cup Connections: Egypt

3 June 2018

Egypt are the next FIFA World Cup nation that we explore any Rovers links with.

Egypt are competing in their third World Cup Finals and they played against England during the 1986 tournament.

Egypt’s provisional squad includes Sam Morsy, born in Wolverhampton in September 1991 to an Egyptian father, who has played for Chesterfield, Wigan Athletic and Port Vale against Rovers. He scored in Rovers’ 3-1 defeat at Saltergate in February 2014 and was in the Wigan side for both fixtures in the 2017/18 season.

The Rovers Player in Egypt

Junior Agogo, who was born in Ghana in August 1979, scored 41 goals in 126 League matches with Rovers between 2003 and 2006.

In July 2008 he joined the Egyptian side Zamalek SC and he scored four times in 15 matches before leaving that club in August 2009.

Born in Trinidad in June 1979, Nigel Pierre played three times for Rovers in the 1999/2000 campaign, starting once and coming on as substitute twice. He joined the Egyptian side Al Ansar in August 2002 before returning to Trinidadian club football the following month.

The Egyptian International

Born to an Egyptian father and an English mother in September 1984, Adam El Abd captained Wycombe Wanderers against Rovers in the Football League Trophy match in August 2017 and his brother Joe played rugby union for Bristol.

He is the holder of seven full caps, having first played for Egypt in their 2-1 win against Cameroon in May 2012.

When Rovers played West Brom in a pre-season friendly in July 2017, the Baggies fielded Ahmed Hegazi. Born in Ismailia in January 1991, Hegazi has 43 full caps and has previously played professionally in Egypt with both Ismaily and Al Ahly.

Careers in Egypt

Dave MacKay, who managed Doncaster Rovers against Rovers in 1987/88 and Birmingham City against Rovers two seasons later, was manager at Egyptian side Zamalek from 1991 to 1993.

Tom Duncan (1899-1940) played for Rovers between the wars; his son in law was Don Revie, later the England manager, who played for Hull City against Rovers in the FA Cup in February 1951 and was manager of Al Ahly in the 1984/85 season.

Allen Harris, who played four times for Plymouth Argyle against Rovers in the early 1970s, was also manager of Al Ahly, between 1993 and 1995.

The current manager of Liverpool’s Egyptian Academy is Dave Ridler, who played against Rovers between 1997 and 2003 with Wrexham, Macclesfield Town and Shrewsbury Town.
