Goals from Jordan Carey, Ollie Hulbert and James Spruce secured an impressive victory for the academy against Forest Green Rovers on Friday evening at the GFA.
Our U-18 side came out on top in the clash of the Rovers last Friday night, in a match played at GFA HQ, thanks to goals from Jordan Carey, Ollie Hulbert and James Spruce.
Tom Parrinello had this to say afterwards; “It was a good game and a good performance which was pleasing, because we included some members of our U-15 and U-16 squads.
“Forest Green fielded a side top heavy with second year scholars, so it was a good test for our lads who coped very well.
“Jordan Carey opened the scoring for us in the first half, after we had missed a penalty, following some good work down the right. Lucas Tomlinson cut inside and after a goalmouth scramble Jordan was able to score from close range.
“It was a deserved lead but, unfortunately we conceded from a set piece just before half time and went in all square at the break.
“I felt we could raise our game after the break, especially in the final third and we did just that.
“Ollie Hulbert, one of our U-16 players, put us back in front with a cracking volley from the edge of the box and then set up James Spruce for the third goal with 20 minutes remaining.
“I have to say that the scoreline flattered our visitors as, given the chances we created, we could have scored six or seven goals.
“It was our first game for five weeks and it was pleasing to see that the lads had followed the programme we gave them to follow over the Christmas and New Year break and it was obvious that they had worked hard and adhered to it.
“The level of performance in this game was fantastic and whilst it was a good all round team performance, special praise should go to our two U-15 players Kinsly Murray and Joe Budd who both did really well after going on as substitutes.”
