Portsmouth 3-2 Bristol RoversOur U-18 side slipped to a 3-2 defeat against Portsmouth last Saturday in spite of goals from Jordan Carey and Lewis Ellington.
Assistant PDP Coach David Buckwell had this to say afterwards; "We made an excellent start to the game, building a number of attacks from the back and creating several goalscoring opportunities in the first 25 minutes.
"As so often happens, though, when you don’t take your chances you pay the consequences and we went 1-0 down after 27 minutes following a long throw into our box. Unfortunately we didn't deal with it and the loose ball, from a flick on, was headed in by a Portsmouth striker.
"On the whole, our response was good but 10 minutes later a long ball downfield from the goalkeeper wasn't dealt with and Portsmouth picked up the second ball, progressed up the pitch and a Portsmouth player shot across our goalkeeper from 20 yards to make it 2-0.
"Five minutes later we were 3-0 down after failing to deal with another long ball and Portsmouth went into half time with a three goal advantage.
"It was a disappointing first half as we didn’t give ourselves the solid platform defensively, from front to back. It doesn’t matter how well you play with the ball, without good defending across the pitch you will be second best.
"Credit to the players though, they have stuck together during difficult moments all season and Saturday was no different.
"On 50 minutes Jordan Carey finished well from a good ball from James Spruce and made it 3-1. Although we created a number of chances and fought hard to come back, it wasn’t until the 75th minute that Lewis Ellington pounced on some confusion in the Portsmouth back line from a good pass in behind from Sam Blake and finished well on the half volley from 20 yards to make it 3-2.
"We had chances to equalise towards the end of the game, with Connor Jones and Lucas Tomlinson going close. However it wasn’t to be and although there were a number of positives with the ball, it's clear that we need to improve defensively and this is something we are working hard to improve."
