Gillingham 1-3 Bristol RoversSAT 7TH MARCH 2015
In only their second Merit League Two fixture, our U-18 side returned from Gillingham with a 3-1 victory under their belts thanks to goals from Blake Davies (2) and Ryan Broom.
“We played really well in the first half, after a long trip which saw us arrive at Gillingham less than an hour before kick off”, said Youth Team Manager Alan Walsh.
“In spite of that we began the game well and took a fifth minute lead when Tom Fry played in Blake Davies, who beat the offside trap before slotting the ball past the Gillingham goalkeeper into the far corner of the net.
“We increased our lead after 15 minutes thanks to Ryan Broom who got on the end of Elliott Green’s flick on, beat his marker, and was brought down inside the area. Ryan got up and despatched the resulting spot kick with some aplomb.
“Given the pressure we exerted on the Gillingham back line we might well have increased our lead, and the only threat they posed was from set pieces and Kieran Preston did make a point blank save from one of them to preserve our two goal advantage.”
In spite of controlling first half proceedings, Alan’s side conceded just two minutes before the half time whistle.
“We gave away possession on the counter attack and Kieran, who was out of position, was beaten by a shot from 35 yards.
“After the break we were under a great deal of pressure before we broke and scored a third goal which was very similar to our first.
“On this occasion Blake was played in by Ryan, and once again he beat the offside trap, before beating the keeper with a right foot shot.
“We went on to see the game out, and I was very proud of the way the lads battled. We left Bristol at 7.30am and although our preparation was far from ideal they battled, and applied themselves well, and thoroughly deserved their win.”
