UNDER-18'S BACK TO WINNING WAYS AGAINST EXETER CITY

8 December 2015

Exeter City 1-3 Bristol Rovers

Our U-18 side came from behind to beat their Exeter City counterparts, thanks to goals from Sam Iles, Sam Hedges and Olly Mehew.

Manager Alan Walsh had this to say afterwards; “We made five changes to our starting lineup, but our first half performance was very similar to the one against Yeovil in our previous game and we went in a goal down at half time when some poor defending cost us.

“Our most threatening player in the opening period was Dan Lammiman who saw one shot pushed on to the bar by the Exeter keeper.”

Exeter did get the ball in the net again just before half time, but the whistle had already gone as Alfie Kilgour sustained a head injury when challenging their centre forward. Alfie was unconscious for a while, half on and half off the pitch, and as he was complaining of neck pains he wasn’t moved and an ambulance sent for.

“Thankfully, after x-rays and CT and MRI scans he was able to return home on Saturday evening, though Academy rules on head injuries means that he can’t play again for 23 days from the date of the incident.

“I would like to pay tribute to our physio, Steve Bissix, all of the Exeter staff and the staff at Exeter Hospital who were fantastic in the way they looked after Alfie.”

As Alfie still being treated as the second half started, play was switched to an adjacent pitch

“That seemed to work in our favour. Even though the home side enjoyed a great deal of possession they didn’t make it count and we frequently hit them on the counter attack and it was from one such move that we equalised.

“We won possession midway inside our half and Connor Jones ran, with the ball, to the edge of the Exeter box before finding Eliot Green. His shot was parried by the goalkeeper as far as Sam Hedges, who was making his first start for us, and he slotted the ball home.

“Sam Iles put us in front with a powerful header from a corner and Olly Mehew added a third  following some good build up play.
