Newport County 2-5 Bristol Rovers

Wed 8th April 2015 victorious

Our U-18 side maintained their unbeaten record in Merit league Two with a convincing win against Newport County yesterday, when Laurent Davis-Wilson, Bradley Confrey, Blake Davies, Tom Fry and Elliott Green were all on target.

“It was”, said Youth Team Manager Alan Walsh, “a good performance in hot conditions on a dry pitch.

"However we might well have been a goal down in the first five minutes after a mistake gave Newport an opportunity to take the lead. Kieran Preston made a good save, though, and parried a shot away. Newport picked up the loose bal and another shot came in but was cleared off the line by Louis Ezwele.

"We took the lead in the tenth minute thanks to Laurent Davis-Wilson, who scored with a low volley from the edge of the area.

"From that moment we kept Newport at bay and they didn’t really create anything at all, though it wasn't until first half stoppage time that we added the second goal our play deserved. Elliott Green's shot produced an excellent save from the Newport goalkeeper, who pushed the ball behind and Bradley Confrey was on hand to divert the ball into the net from the resulting corner.

Rovers began the second half well and added a third goal five minutes after the restart; "Laurent Davis-Wilson played the ball into Blake Davies on the edge of the area and he scored with a left foot shot across the keeper and into the far corner.

"The fourth goal arrived after the referee played a good advantage for us. Ryan Broom's run into the box ended when he was fouled. It was a clear penalty, but the loose ball ran to Tom Fry who stuck it in the back of the net and the goal was allowed to stand.

"Our fifth goal was probably best of the game and came after Mitch Palmer picked out Elliott Green with a superb pass  and he slid the ball under the keeper as he advanced off his line."

The home side then scored twice in the final five minutes, the first from a speculative 30 yard volley that flew past goalkeeper Kieran Preston. The second was the result of a lapse of concentration at the back which allowed a home player to slam the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

"In spite of the disappointment of conceding those two late goals," said Alan, "the lads deserve great credit for playing so well and for extending their unbeaten run to 19.
