AFC Bournemouth 1-1 RoversSaturday 11th October 2014
Our U-18 side produced a battling performance to take a point from their game against AFC Bournemouth on Saturday.
Having taken the lead through a first half goal from Blake Davies, they conceded an equaliser in the second period and had to be content with a point.
Once again Youth Team Manager Alan Walsh had to field a young side, due to the injury situation, and schoolboys Louis Ellington, Connor Jones and Sam Blake were all in the squad.
“It was an eventful game,” said Alan, “but it was good to stop the losing streak we have been on just recently.
“In fact, had we been a little bit more composed in the final third, and more clinical in front of goal, we might have gone on to win the game.
“We started brightly and tried to get men behind the ball to stop them playing through us and that worked quite successfully for the first ten minutes or so.”
The home side were reduced to ten men at that point.
“We won possession and, in a counter attack, Ryan Broom was in on goal but was brought down on the edge of the area. That resulted in a red card for the Bournemouth defender and we went on to control the game to a degree.
“They reverted to playing with two banks of four and a lone striker up front, which seemed to suit us. We put them under a great deal of pressure and were rewarded with a goal on 28 minutes.
“Louis Ellington’s right wing cross was deflected across goal and reached Blake Davies who slotted the ball into the bottom corner from 12 yards. The goal gave us a great deal of confidence and we were the team in the ascendancy for the remainder of the half.”
Bournemouth changed formation after the break and went to a 3-4-2 system, which seemed to cause Rovers a few problems.
“In spite of that we still managed to get forward quite often, but our final cross, or shot, could have been a lot better.
“Bournemouth got back on level terms just after the hour mark, when our failure to clear a ball into the box resulted in a goalmouth scramble and the ball was forced home.
“Both sides then had chances to go on and win the game but, in the end, had to settle for a point.”
