Bristol Rovers 1-0 Exeter CitySATURDAY 1ST NOVEMBER 2014
A first half goal from George Corp gave our U-18 side victory in this clash with Exeter City at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
Youth Team manager Alan Walsh was delighted on four fronts; “First of all, it was great that we were able to play on the Memorial Stadium pitch as it was a fantastic experience for the boys and I would like to thank everyone who agreed to our request to play there.
“Secondly, we put in a great first half performance and, of course, we won and kept a clean sheet!”
The only goal of the game came before the break; “It came following a good build up and George Corp got forward and managed to get a shot away. The Exeter keeper misjudged it and the ball bounced in front of him before nestling in the net.
“The lead was thoroughly deserved as our young side played some very good football in the opening period.
“Unfortunately, we were unable maintain that form in the second half, which turned out to be a rather scrappy affair, and both sides gave away possession far too often.
“In saying that we should give Exeter a little bit of credit. They changed their formation, from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2, which caused us a few problems although there was only one occasion they really threatened our goal.
That came following a corner and a header towards goal which we cleared off the line. Other than that they never seriously threatened to get back on level terms.
“Overall, I felt we deserved to win the game, in which we defended well as a team, though we must continue to work hard at keeping possession, something I mentioned to the lads after the game.”
Alan was able to give Mitch Palmer another outing from the bench and also welcomed back Harrison Trueman from injury. In addition 15 year old Lewis Ellington completed ninety minutes; “He did really well in the first half when most of our attacking moves went through him as he linked up play and found space in between their central defenders.”
