Bristol Rovers 2-0 Torquay United
Our U-18 side returned to winning ways on Saturday when a Jamie Lucas goal and an own goal gave them a 2-0 win against their Torquay United counterparts.
“It was good to get a win under our belts,” said Youth Team Manager Alan Walsh, “and it was nice to score some goals again as we had gone three games without finding the back of the net.
“I felt that we controlled the first half and played some good football without really getting in behind their defence often enough. We did have a couple of good chances to edge in front, one from a corner that no one could get on the end of, and a couple of long range efforts.
“In fact we enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but had to wait until the 42nd minute before we scored.
“Ryan Broom was played in and he beat his man before crossing into the box where Jamie swivelled and hit a shot into back of the net.”
The visitors hadn’t really threatened in the opening period and Alan was looking for more of the same, with a little bit more penetration, from his side after the break.
“It didn’t really happen for us, though, and we never seemed to get going playing against a strong breeze. Torquay did have a few chances to score, mainly from our errors, and we were indebted to goalkeeper Kieran Preston who made two or three outstanding saves to keep us in it.
“Our second goal came with only two minutes of the game remaining when Chad Douglas got past his full back and whipped in a cross which saw one of the Torquay defenders get there first and touch the ball past his own keeper.
“Overall, I would say that I was pleased with our first half performance but felt we could have been better after the break. It was satisfying to keep a clean sheet, and effort and work rate couldn’t be faulted. However, we have to learn to be more clinical in front of goal."
