Club secretary gets on his bike for charity
Life is all about timing someone once said and this seems to be a great moment to start this blog when the club are about to stage a major fundraising event here at The Memorial this coming Saturday in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.
It’s the Football League's Main Charity for this season and all clubs are devoting at least one matchday to help the cause. In addition to that some of us have found ourselves somehow on the top of a bike… ( still not sure how this happened !!! )…and come June will be riding said machine all the way from London to Amsterdam and finishing or collapsing at the Ajax Stadium.
I understand at the moment that there will be some 90 of us in the ‘pelaton’ (technical word there) representing all the professional football clubs in the country.
Inevitably that other word “Training” has loomed large and has begun. Biking in to work ( proving quicker than the car to be fair ) and sweating all over various machines at the local gym under the expert guidance of the Rovers Conditioning Coach.
There has been all manner of dietary advice being offered by all and sundry and my life, and maybe body shape, has abruptly changed! But the aim is great; to raise as much money as possible to help the research into this killer disease.
An awful fact is that during Saturdays game against Plymouth for instance 4 men somewhere in the country will die from this form of cancer. My personal fundraising has so far reached just over £1300 and welcome donations can be made through my JustGiving page.
And so onward pedalling furiously towards the next hill, but I will hopefully be back soon with more news as the adventure and thigh muscles develop…….Ouch !!
