Tom's week

18 July 2014

Pre-season up there with the toughest

Central defender Tom Lockyer found himself back in familiar surroundings this week, as he used to live just a few minutes away from the University of South Wales where he and his colleagues have been training.

However revisiting his old haunts hasn’t been on the agenda as he and his colleagues have been put through a training schedule that’s been tiring even for those watching!

“Training has been very hard, but that’s what you expect during pre-season. The facilities here at USW are superb and I think we have all benefited from being here.

“The fact that we have come away as a group is good for everyone as we get to know one another a little better, which can only be good for the season ahead.”

Many of the current squad have said that the pre-season training schedule is one of the toughest they have endured.

“It’s definitely up there with the toughest I’ve undertaken. Still, it’s what’s needed as we all require good fitness levels to take into the season.”

Manager Darrell Clarke has added five new faces to his squad to date and they have slotted seamlessly into the group.

“There is a good feel about the group. Compared to last season, there seems to be a much better spirit here. The new lads have settled in well and everyone is getting along fine.

The only pre-season game to date, at Cheltenham on Tuesday, saw the side play with an energy that was lacking in many games last season.

“The gaffer wants us to pay with high tempo and that’s what we did for most of the game.”

After a very good first season as a professional, he’s looking to push on again this time around.

“I feel can improve again this season and, in any case, it is pointless looking back now. I was happy with my own performances last season, but I am always looking to push on and progress.”

The disappointment of relegation has to be put behind us as we look ahead to a new season.

“The way that last season ended was shocking and defeat in the final game hurt so bad. It was difficult to get over that, but we can’t dwell on it. We have to look forward and hope to have a really good season this
time around.

“The new season is only a few weeks away and I can’t wait to get started.”
