Conference connections 4

6 July 2014

Links with teams we face next season

Rovers have links with every Conference club, though it has to be said that some of them are somewhat tenuous!

In the final part of this brief look at the teams we will face in the season ahead, we travel from Telford to Wrexham.

Two goals from Bruce Bannister and another from Brian Godfrey secured a 3-0 win for Rovers the last time we met Telford (now known as AFC Telford).

That was in an FA Cup tie played at Eastville on 20th November 1971.

A number of players have appeared for both clubs, among them Marcus Bignot and David Pritchard.

The Boxing Day and New Year Day clashes Against Torquay United are games to look forward to in the season ahead.

We have played each other on 76 previous occasions, the most recent being the game at the Memorial Stadium in April this year when the Gulls won 2-1 thanks to goals from Shaquile Coulthirst and Lee Mansell,
who has, of course, since signed for us.

Among the 49 players to have appeared for both clubs are Paul Trollope and Ian Holloway.

A Jason Roberts hat trick enabled Rovers to beat Welling United 3-0 the last time we met.

The occasion was an FA Cup tie at the Memorial Stadium on 14th November 1998.

Former Rovers players Rob Quinn and Robbie Ryan have turned out for both clubs.

A total of 15 players have represented both Rovers and Woking, a list that includes Steve Foster, Luke Basford and Jefferson Louis (who appears to have played for most of the clubs we will meet next season!)

We end our brief sojourn of Conference Clubs with Wrexham, a team we have met on 42 occasions in the Football League.

Our last meeting came at the Memorial Stadium on 24th March 2007 when a Jeff Whitley goal gave the Welsh side a 1-0 win.

Among the players to have appeared for both clubs are Phil Bater, Joe Anyinsah and, inevitably, Jefferson Louis!

Many thanks to Stephen Byrne for his help in compiling this article; a full list of Conference connections will be included in next season’s matchday programme ‘The Pirate’.
