WARD HOPES TO REPLICATE RECENT HOME FORM

23 January 2014

Manager on this weekend's game

With two home games coming up John Ward is hoping his side can continue their recent good form at the Memorial Stadium.

Newport visit the Mem on Saturday, before Rovers play host to Accrington on Tuesday, and it is a good chance for the Pirates to pick up some vital points.

The manager said: “It is a good opportunity to get points on the board, but we have to get them, and that is easier said than done.

“Newport are the first of the two home games and they come sitting just outside the top seven, and they will be pushing to try and get that.

“They will come in good numbers to come and support their team and it will have that edge to the game.

“We have to control the emotion of the afternoon and play some good football, which we are capable of doing, especially at home.

“Then on Tuesday Accrington come here and we have the reminder they beat us here last year and they beat us away.

“There will be an edge to both games, but we have to try and replicate our recent home form, which has been decent.”

Despite their new league status, Newport have impressed this season.

John said: “They play, they go forward, their manager likes to get his team forward and I have been impressed with how they have started.

“They have senior players in there who know how to deal with league football, and they will be thinking that they can get into those play-off spots.

“We have got to try and put a short stop to that on Saturday.”

Danny Woodards got some important game time in the midweek friendly up at Burton.

John said: “Danny played 65-70 minutes at right back, he put his first tackle in at about five past kick off, which was a pretty strong one, and he got up with a smile on his face and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon.

“I am really pleased that Danny has added to the couple of cameos he has already had, and I think we now have him back ready to go.

“Seanan will be another week, if we had a friendly game next weeke he would have played in that. He is 90% fit and ready to go, we just need to get that extra little bit for him. With Ryan Brunt we have to wait and bide our time.

“Matt Harrold has had some treatment this week, but he is fine.”
