John Ward's post match reaction at the Proact Stadium

Manager John Ward was both disappointed and frustrated with his side’s performance at Chesterfield yesterday.

Rovers suffered a 1-3 defeat at the hands of the league leaders and seldom looked likely to return to Bristol with any points on the board.

Goals at the start of each half, and one just before half time shortly after Lee Brown had conjured up an equaliser, left Rovers still searching for their second away victory of the season.

“It was frustrating all the way through, and we have been punished by a good team who are top of the league.

‘It was a massive disappointment, as we have always seemed to manage to raise our game against the top teams and we weren’t able to do that today.”

The third goal, just after half time, sealed his side’s fate.

“That one was a killer, obviously, in terms of the result, and knocked a bit of stuffing out of everyone. Even after that, though both sides had opportunities to change the scoreline, but we didn’t play with a belief at
the top end of the pitch.”

Goals at the start of each half seemed to knock Ward’s side out of their stride.

“They did, but we knew what to expect. We saw Chesterfield play at York in midweek and they scored in the first few minutes there so we said we expected a quick start from them and that we had to stand strong. As you saw, though, we didn’t do that at the start of either half and we were made to pay for that.”

Conditions, though not as severe, were similar to last Saturday with a strong wind blowing down the pitch and rain falling in the later stages.

“We played a great deal of basic stuff last week in windy conditions and in a similar situation. Today we didn’t do the basic things and that’s why we are where we are in League Two. We did manage to get enough balls forward, but they didn’t stick at all. “We did have some opportunities, but things just didn’t happen.

‘What was unusual today is that we have been quite tight at the back this season but we weren’t today. As a squad, and as a team, we need to do better than we did today.”
