Rovers 1-2 Newport

Our U-18 side began their season with a 1-2 defeat against Newport County last Saturday.

Trailing by two goals going into the final 15 minutes, Blake Davies did manage to reduce the arrears but the visitors held out to take the points.

Youth Team Manager Alan Walsh was missing a number of his second year scholars through injury and named five schoolboys in his squad .

Nevertheless, he was disappointed with the result and said; "The fact that we were missing so many players is not an excuse because the players we did select should have been good enough to perform to the same standard they have during pre-season, against opposition of a similar quality.

"We started the game quite brightly, but were unable to maintain the momentum. It was a fairly even first half, but a lack of concentration on our part allowed Newport to score two minutes before the break.

"We keep letting our lads know that they are at their most vulnerable when they are in possession, as they don't expect to lose the ball. In this instance we did lose it and Newport counter attacked swiftly to open the scoring.

"We began the second half reasonably well but 15 minutes after the restart we again gave away possession and that cost us a second goal.

"There have been too many instances, in pre-season, where we have switched off for a short time and in this game it cost us dearly. We try to highlight this fault to the players, but the only way to eradicate this
fault in their play is to work on it in games and in training.

"Therefore we continue to work on team shape and pattern of play and impress on them the importance of concentrating  for the whole 90 minutes."

His side's goal arrived 15 minutes from time.

"Blake, who was scoring goals for fun in pre-season, took it well. He is what I would call a penalty box striker and given three or four chances in a game he will usually convert one or two. At the moment we are working on his play outside the box as we try to make him the complete centre forward.

"There might well have been more goals towards the end of the game because as we pushed up in search of an equaliser, Newport created a couple more chances while we almost equalised with four minutes to go but hit a shot just over the bar."
