DRAW FOR THE U18S

3 September 2013

Newport 1-1 Rovers

Newport County 1
Bristol Rovers 1

Our U-18 side had to settle for a point from their game against Newport County at the weekend, with Jamie Lucas scoring a late equaliser to cancel out the goal scored by the home side in the first half.

Youth Team Manager Alan Walsh felt it was a frustrating game, as his side created a number of goalscoring opportunities, but failed to capitalise, and were left chasing the game after conceding .

“Given that we created more chances in this game than in our previous two games combined, it was disappointing not to have won.

“Unfortunately we were unable to convert any of those chances and we only scored in the final ten minutes, by which time we should have had the game comfortably won.

“That said, I couldn’t fault the boys for their effort and they worked hard and controlled the game for long spells.”

Having created three or four opportunities in the opening half an hour, Alan’s side found themselves a goal down going into the half time break.

“We appeared to switch off a little bit last 15 minutes of the half and when we cleared a ball into our box, our central defenders moved up. However it was headed back over them and the Newport player who was in an offside position made no attempt to play the ball and one of his team mates ran from deep and hit a shot into the corner of the net from 18 yards.

“We created more chances towards the end of first half and again after the break, but we just couldn’t finish and players who were in excellent positions to shoot elected to pass the ball instead, which meant we didn’t test their keeper as much as we would have liked.”

The equaliser eventually arrived, from substitute Jamie Lucas.

“Jamie was played in by Jay Malpas and he turned and got across his marker on the edge of the box before slotting past the keeper from 16 yards

“We did exert some pressure on the home defence after that though we might have conceded again when they hit us on the break as we pushed players forward in search of a second goal.

“However, it was a game we should have won comfortably, and it was unusual for us not to finish off more of our chances.”
