Bristol Rovers 4 Newport County

Our U-18 side beat Newport County 4-0 on Saturday in the Youth Alliance League Cup thereby retaining their 100% record in the competition with two group games, against Exeter and Plymouth, to play.

Carlos Barra, Donovan Wilson, Dominic Thomas and Jamie Lucas scored the goals in a victory that was, in the end, quite comfortable though it wasn’t until the second half that Alan Walsh’s side turned their domination into goals.

“I think we just shaded the first half,” said Alan, “and deserved to go in a goal to the good at half time.

“However Newport were still in the game at that stage and although we created a number of opportunities, we didn’t make the breakthrough until the 35th minute.

“The goal came from some good build up play involving Donovan Wilson, who played in Carlos Barra out on the left. He took the ball well and cut inside before rifling a good shot into the corner of the net.”

His side began the second half brightly and put Newport on the back foot.

“The second goal came after a cross from Aaron Ward-Baptiste and Donovan Wilson, who had his back to goal, turned and volleyed a shot into the roof of the net for a really good finish.

“That goal gave us a little bit of breathing space and we settled down to play some decent football.

“The third goal arrived from a corner and as Newport had left a couple of men up, we left two players to mark them and another just in front of them which created space for us in and around their area.

“The ball was played into Ryan Broom on the edge of the area and his shot was parried by the keeper as far as Louis Ezwele who reacted quickly to slot the ball into the net.

“We scored again before the end, a fully deserved one for Jamie Lucas who had missed a couple of earlier chances. He persevered, though, and got on the end of a cross and scored an excellent goal.

“It was a good team performance after the previous game against Cheltenham. We showed the boys the DVD of that game and highlighted areas where we wanted them to improve and they took everything on board and have now set the standard for their next game.”

Team: Kieran Preston, Mitch Palmer, Louis Ezwele, Trey Anderson, Danny Greenslade, Aaron Bryan (Jay Malpas, 63), Aaron Ward-Baptiste (Ryan Broom, 60), Dominic Thomas, Carlos Barra (Chad Douglas, 63), Jamie Lucas, Donovan Wilson.
