Manager on Saturday's game

Bristol Rovers travel to table topping Oxford United this weekend, and John Ward knows that it is going to be a difficult match for his team.

Oxford’s home form has not been as good as their away form, so the manager believes it will be a big game for them as well.

He said: “We know what we are going in to, it is a big game for them, they will want to see it as a home win, but we have got to make that difficult for them.

“They have won five away and two at home, but any club at home wants to do well.

“You always fancy yourself at home, but I guess teams are probably not quite as open there, so that is probably why they have found it a little bit difficult.

“They are the best team in our division at the moment, so we have to play well.”

The manager’s side will be bolstered by new loan signing Chris Beardsley, but Matt Harrold and Lee Brown are both 50/50.

John said: “Matt Harrold and Lee Brown are both 50/50 at the moment, but they are going to come out this morning and give it a go, and we will know if there is a reaction tomorrow.

“Mark McChrystal is not going to be fit, he has a tendonitis problem that will take a few more weeks to recover.”

And although Rovers won at the Kassam Stadium last year, the manager knows that he has to concentrate on the present.

He said: “We know we won there last season, and it was a tough old game, but we have to look at more recent times.

“Some of the guys who played on Saturday for us, probably didn’t play in that came.

“Just because we did it last year doesn’t mean we can do it again, we have to make sure we do what we can do now with the players we have got available.

“We know we will get a big support, we know they will want to get behind the team and see them do well.”
