John Ward was really pleased with the effort and attitude shown by his team in this afternoon’s 0-0 with Chesterfield at the Memorial Stadium.
The manager believed that his team matched the top four side for large parts of the game.
He said: “I thought it was a fantastic effort from the team and the supporters. These supporters acknowledge that we are young and in a tough situation at the moment.
“We have given them a really good game today and matched them in a lot of parts of the pitch.
“We had a switch round of the team shape, and if anyone wants to say they are not working hard, I think we have a case against them.
“Yes we are young and yes they will make some mistakes, but they don’t pack in trying, we just need to improve our football.
“It is a good point against a top four team, and we stood our ground against some very experienced footballers.
“We have got some young kids with a tough core about them mentally, as well as physically.”
John wants to take that attitude in to next weekend’s trip to Oxford.
He said: “We never stop trying, and we are getting that little bit of confidence back, and today’s result and effort will improve that.
“We go to Oxford next week and we cannot fall below the par of that performance. We have got to maintain that and see if we can improve the quality.
“We represent a really good football club here, and we have to represent it the way we are doing.
“I am hoping in due course that these supporters will get their reward as well as the players.”
And although the manager knows there is progress to be made, he believes you have to take things slowly with young players.
He said: “I would be foolish to sit here and say everything is rosy in the garden, as it is not.
“We are fourth from bottom, and three points from a poor performance would be better than one from a good one.
“But if we are building on something we cannot do it too quickly with kids. We will get there and will be ok over time.”
