Manager on new contracts

Bristol Rovers today announced their retained list, and it came as no surprise that John Ward has offered contracts to a number of players.

The manager has made no secret of the fact that his aim to create a sense of stability at the club going in to next season.

He said: “We are trying to make things a bit more stable within the football club. New faces came in in January, and other players have stepped up and deserve another chance.

“There has been a large turnover at the club over the last few years, and we didn’t want that this year, as we are looking to stabilise.

“There will be a couple of new faces, but we did a lot of our work in January.

“We will also be getting three new faces with players returning from injury. With Matt Harrold, Matt Gill and David Clarkson all expected to be back for pre-season it will be like having three new signings.”

The club have offered new contracts to Danny Woodards and Seanan Clucas who both picked up ACL injuries this season.

John said: “We have offered Danny and Seanan new contracts and will be working to get them back to fitness.

“They are two players we would have offered contracts to had they been fit, and we feel they still have a lot to offer the club.

“They proved their worth to me since I joined the club, and even though their involvement was cut short, they played a big part in what we are trying to do here.”

As well as the six scholars offered their first professional contracts, young players including Mitch Harding, Jordan Goddard and Ollie Clarke have also been offered new deals.

John said: “I have seen a lot of potential in these young players, and we have also offered six professional contracts to the scholars.

“Between Alan Walsh and Marcus Stewart we want to continue to develop these young players.

“If we do not give young players an opportunity, we will always be bringing in new faces from outside the club, and for me it is paramount that we produce our own players.

“We are hopeful that these young players can now push on now and play a part in what we are hoping to do here.

“Some of them have already gained valuable experience travelling with the team and making appearances, and we aim to build on that next season.”
