ANOTHER WIN FOR U18S

13 March 2013

Rovers 2-1 Cheltenham

Goals from Chad Douglas and Alefe Santos gave our U-18 side a 2-1 win against Cheltenham Town last Saturday.

Youth Team Manager Alan Walsh says it was a tough game for his side: "Cheltenham started quite brightly and played balls in behind our back four, which put us on the back foot a little bit.

"It took us a while to settle down, but we gradually managed to get back in the game, though we did go behind after 25 minutes. A long clearance from their goalkeeper saw our central defenders and one of the Cheltenham lads challenge for the ball and it came off of one of them and fell nicely to one of their midfielders who ran through to score.

"He was clearly in an offside position when he received the ball, so I can only assume that the assistant referee thought that one of our defenders had the final touch before the it reached him. I have to say that from where I was standing I couldn't be sure who got the touch."

His side hit back and equalised before half time.

"It came following a good move down the right that culminated in Jamie Lucas crossing into the box, where Chad Douglas headed back across goal and into the net."

Rovers enjoyed the majority of possession in the second period.

"We were camped in the Cheltenham half for most of the time and put them under a great deal of pressure, though to be fair to them they did look dangerous on the counter attack. We managed to keep them at bay, though, and created a number of chances before scoring the winner ten minutes from time.

"A long clearance from Matt Macey evaded almost everyone except Alefe Santos, who nipped in to beat the keeper who had come off his line to clear."

Alan's side were reduced to ten men five minutes from time, when Dominic Thomas was sent off after receiving his second yellow card, but they held out to win the game.

"In the end I thought we deserved the win, if only for our second half performance."
