Ward on pre season loss to Derby
John Ward was pleased with the test his side were given at the Memorial Stadium this evening.
Rovers went down 2-0 to a strong Derby County side, but the manager was pleased with the work out.
He said: “It was the type of game I expected and wanted. If I wanted to win 9-0 I would go up the road and play someone and have a nice easy night.
“They have scored 11 goals in two games, so that was the extent of the difficulty we had tonight, and I thought we gave them a good game.
"The fitter physically we get, the fitter mentally we get. We have had one or two opportunities to get on the score sheet, and in the main it has been a top night for us, it has been a tough evening, but we have tried to give them a worthwhile trip down here.
“If we as a group want to improve ourselves, these are the tests we have to come up against. This is top drawer match practice for us and where we are trying to get to.”
And with Rovers rocked by more injuries, the manager is looking to some of the younger lads to step up to the plate and prove themselves.
He said: “That is the squad you have seen tonight, I have no one else to come back in.
“It reminded me of when I first came in and thought ‘who are these lads’, although I do know them now.
“It was a valuable experience for some of the young players tonight and they are learning quickly. They have now put their face in front of the Rovers supporters and they support their own
“As long as the boys try very, very hard they will get support from me and from the Gasheads who come every Saturday.
“As disappointed as we are for people like Fabian and Jim Paterson, it opens doors for other people.
“The mind set and attitude of the team both senior and junior has been extremely good and that is something we need to work hard to maintain.”
