YOUTH ALLIANCE MATCH REPORT

21 February 2013

Portsmouth 0-2 Rovers

Two Jamie Lucas goals enabled our U-18 side to beat Portsmouth 2-0 and progress through to the final of the Youth Alliance Cup.

Youth Team Manager Alan Walsh was delighted to see his side make it through; "The boys deserve it because since I have been here they have shown tremendous commitment and application and their work rate, in every game, has been superb.

"Reaching the final of this competition is fantastic and the aim now is to go on and win it."

In a fairly even first half against Portsmouth, chances were few and far between, though his side did manage to take a lead into the half time break when Jamie scored after 35 minutes.

"Portsmouth had some decent players but, apart from one great save by Matt Macey, seldom troubled our goal. It was the same at the other end but we were able to capitalise on a mistake at the back to edge in front.

"Josh Southway played a long ball out of defence and their central defender went up to clear but and their centre half went up to clear but misjudged his header and it played in Jamie, leaving him in a one on one with the goalkeeper and he remained calmed to finish well.

"At half time I reminded out lads that Portsmouth needed to be watched closely and asked them to go out and play in the same way they had in the first half, reminding them that if they kept a clean sheet then they would be in the final.

"We went on to play some excellent possession football and restricted Portsmouth to few chances and we scored again just after the hour mark. After  some good play down the right Jamie was played in and he beat his man before slotting the ball past the keeper from just inside the area.

"Our play became a little bit sloppy as the game drew to a close, and we gave away some needless free kicks which allowed Portsmouth to get men forward.  However we weathered the storm and came away with a deserved win."
