Manager on defeat to Newport and a chance to put things right on Saturday

John Ward was disappointed with his team’s attacking performance against Newport on Saturday.

Rovers lost 1-0 at Rodney Parade, and the manager believed his front line was too weak.

He said: “The biggest disappointment for me was at the front end, where we didn’t threaten enough.

“We didn’t concede in free play, and the penalty was a bit harsh to say the least, but we had enough of the play to be more damaging, but we weren’t.

“That is what annoyed me a bit, we should have threatened the goal a bit better. We have been too soft.”

However, the gaffer was pleased with the side’s defensive performance. He said: “We defended really well, we haven’t had major problems defending as we improved that a lot last year by working hard.

“We were strong and put our bodies on the line, we had to defend well as they were physically strong.”

And the manager is keen to get the first win of the season under his belt.

He said: “We have got to get win, you always want your first win of the season, and the longer it goes on the longer people worry about it. It would be nice to get it this Saturday.

“The supporters are terrific, and we all want to get that win for them. I felt for them on Saturday as we didn’t give them a lot to take home.”
