John Ward was delighted to see his side pick up their first win of the season when they beat York City 3-2 at the Memorial Stadium this afternoon.
Two goals from David Clarkson and a strike from John-Joe O’Toole was enough to give Rovers all three points in a game packed with incident.
The manager confirmed that his side had been working on the attacking aspect of their game on the training ground this week.
He said: “When you are 2-0 up against ten men you have to win, and then we are 2-2 with a strange penalty against us, and we showed a lot of strength to win the game.
“The first goal was a great strike from Clarkson, and the second and third goals were really good team goals.
“It is stuff we have been working on in the training ground to try and improve the forward part of our game which was lacking last Saturday, and it has come up trumps which is great.”
The manager was also pleased with the way his team dug in to win the game.
He said: “We had a penalty against us last week and we lost the game, but this week we came back strongly and we are learning.
“We have a number of young boys out there learning quickly as they have been thrust to the front of the group, and I have to be delighted with that.
“We have done well mentally and physically, and we have won the game, which is great.”
And it was great to see Ryan Brunt back in the side. John said: “I am just pleased that we created better at the top, Ryan Brunt made a difference.
“I was not sure Ryan would make 90 minutes, but it got to ten minutes to go and I thought we still needed someone to win headers in our box and I asked him and he seemed alright.
“We stuck with him even though I think him and I would have preferred 75 minutes, but needs must.”
