Plymouth 1-3 Rovers
Plymouth Argyle 1
Bristol Rovers 3
Our U-18 side began their league season with a 3-1 win at Plymouth, courtesy of goals from Laurent Davis-Wilson (2) and Donovan Wilson.
“The lads performed well, and it was a good team performance,” said Youth Team manager Alan Walsh.
“The game came at the end of our seventh week of pre-season training, a period that saw the boys work exceptionally hard on every aspect of their game.
“They set themselves high standards during that time in matches against quality opposition, including one or two adult sides, which has stood them in good stead.”
Laurent scored the opening goal after Rovers had survived an early scare when they just managed to scramble a corner away.
“The home goalkeeper appeared to misjudge Danny Greenslade’s corner from the left and it hit the far post and ricocheted back across the face of goal where Laurent was on hand to volley it into the net. While it was pleasing to edge in front, it’s not a move we had practiced out on the training ground!”
Rovers went on to dominate the remainder of the first half and Laurent scored again just before the break.
“This time it did come from a set piece we had worked on. Danny’s excellent deliver from a free kick out on the right saw Laurent make a great run to meet it and volley past the home keeper.
“We began the second half well and scored again thanks to a fine individual goal by Donovan, who received the ball out on the right, beat his man, and cut inside before hitting a shot across the keeper and into the corner of the net from 20 yards.
“Donovan saw another effort cleared off the line before Argyle scored what turned out to be a consolation goal. They did put us under a little bit of pressure after that, though we still created a few chances and were only denied a fourth goal by their keeper who pulled off an outstanding save from Chad Douglas.”
