Youth team could clinch league title on Saturday
Rovers drew 0-0 with league leaders Oxford in the Youth Alliance League this afternoon at a very windy Friend’s Life Training Ground.
The season is now over for the Us, but Rovers can snatch the league title if they can beat Exeter City in their final game of the season on Saturday.
Conditions were difficult, with a very strong wind battering the pitch, but it was still a competitive game which illustrated why both teams are at the top of the league.
Callum O’Dowda had an early effort for the visitors, shooting wide from 18 yards.
Rovers’ first real attempt on goal came from Shaquille Hunter who made a break down the right and forced a save from the Us keeper.
Oxford then went down the opposite end and James Roberts headed wide of the far post before Roberts then forced a save from Matt Macey in the Rovers goal after breaking down the left.
Alefe Santos fired a shot straight at the keeper as Rovers piled on some pressure before the break.
Hunter put a cross in to the box which was volleyed by Santos form 12 yards out, straight at the keeper.
In the early stages of the second half, Trey Anderson but in a good goal line clearance to help keep Rovers in the game.
Then a shot from the Us James Roberts inside the box forced a save from Macey.
Rovers had a few half chances, with Laurent Mondo shooting over the bar and Jamie Lucas heading wide from a Josh Southway cross.
There was another vital goal line clearance for Rovers, this time from Pat Keary as Oxford began to pile on pressure.
A free kick for the visitors on the edge of the box went wide of the upright.
Rovers youngsters played well in tough conditions, and will now go into Saturday’s game hoping to take the three points needed to win the league.
