U18s FIRST DEFEAT

3 September 2012

Youngsters go down 3-1 to Exeter

Exeter City 3
Bristol Rovers 1

Our U-18 side slipped to their first defeat of the season last Saturday, going down 1-3 to their Exeter City counterparts.

However Development Coach Marcus Stewart felt that the scoreline wasn’t a true reflection of how the game panned out.

“The lads did very well and I was really pleased with how they applied themselves, both as a team and as a unit.

“They never gave up and their never say die attitude, and team spirit, was excellent and pleasing to see.

“We could have been 2-0 ahead in the first twenty minutes as we had a number of opportunities to score, including a couple of one on one situations with their goalkeeper.

“As it was we were two goals down at the break after they had opened the scoring with a freak deflected shot, and then added a second when we didn’t do our job at a set piece.

“We came out of the blocks in the second half, after I took the shackles off them a bit and told them to take the game to Exeter,

“We did that and scored a goal through Jamie Lucas within ten minutes of the restart, and had some really good opportunities to get back on level terms, but never took them.

“We were chasing the game in the closing stages and conceded a third goal two minutes from time when Exeter caught us on the counter attack.”

In spite of the defeat, Marcus had words of encouragement for his team.

“We need to be a little bit more solid at the back. Even when a side creates ten chances in a game, that need to stay solid still applies. We were solid for most of this game and, as I have already mentioned, the boys applied themselves really well.

“There are things they can do to improve, such as putting in a little bit of extra work after training, in order to improve their finishing, their heading, passing, or any other aspect of their game.

“I’ve given them little things like that to practice, which might have made a difference on Saturday, because whilst the team effort was great, there are a number of individual  things they can work on to improve.
