BRANSTON SIGNS ON LOAN

22 November 2012

Defender joins the Gas until Jan 1st

Bristol Rovers have today signed defender Guy Branston on loan from Aldershot until January 1st.

The 33-year-old centre back brings with him a wealth of experience, having played at a number of clubs during his 15 year career to date.

Manager Mark McGhee said: “We find ourselves with a catalogue of injuries to centre halves this season.

“First it was Garry Kenneth, then Cian Bolger and now Tom Parkes, and we felt that we couldn’t keep on improvising.

“We need another centre half even though Cian is on his way back to us, and Tom will not be out for as long as we thought.

“Guy is a very experienced centre half at this level. He is a straight forward uncompromising player, who competes well, and I think he will do a good job for us.”

Branston established his career at Rotherham United after being bought for £50,000 from Leicester City.

He enjoyed two successive promotions with the Millers in his first two years with the club, and kept his place in the team during the Championship years.

In the summer of 2006 he joined Peterborough, after two previous loan spells with the club.

The non-nonsense defender enjoyed loan spells at both Rochdale and Northampton, before joining Notts County and later Kettering Town.

Branston joined Burton Albion on in July 2009 and then signed for Torquay United on loan at the end of January 2010. He came second in Torquay player of the season 2009-10 after only 16 games.

Branston was released by Burton Albion on in July 2010 and subsequently signed a one year deal with Torquay United.

In the summer of 2011, Branston signed for League Two side Bradford City, before joining Aldershot on a free transfer the following summer.

Chairman Nick Higgs said: “We are very grateful to Aldershot for allowing us to take Guy on loan during our injury crisis.

“He is an extremely experience played in League Two, and we hope he can come here and do a good job for us.”

Branston will join up with Rovers for training tomorrow, ready to be included in the squad for Saturday’s game against Bradford at the Memorial Stadium.
