Cheltenham 1-2 Rovers

Cheltenham Town 1
Bristol Rovers 2

Our U-18 side recorded a 2-1 win against their Cheltenham counterparts on Saturday, thanks to goals from Dominic Thomas and Connor Finn.

Youth Team Manager Alan Walsh was pleased with the attitude shown by his side in what he described as a very good team performance.

“In a game of very few goalscoring opportunities, both sides tried to play in the right manner and our lads stood up well against a fairly physical Cheltenham outfit.”

The first goal arrived after 28 minutes. “Good work by Jamie Lucas down the left saw him get to the byline and pull the ball back for Dominic Thomas, who finished well with a sidefooted shot into the corner of the net.

“Dominic had to go off, with a thigh strain ten minutes later, which meant we had to make some positional changes, but we continued playing well and held our lead until the hour mark.

“Our two central defenders, Trey Anderson and Pat Keary, who were strong and commanding throughout, made their only mistake of the game. Both went for the same ball and it reached one of Cheltenham’s strikers who found a team mate with his pass and he took one touch before slotting home the equaliser.

“Whilst that was a disappointment, there was a good reaction from the lads. They didn’t drop their heads and hit back well and were rewarded with what proved to be the winning goal ten minutes from time.

“A great 35 yard effort from Connor Finn caught the keeper off his line and the ball flew into the net.

“Although we then had to sustain a spell of pressure from Cheltenham, we hit them well on the counter attack though there were no further goals.”

The game saw a return to the side for Pat Keary, who played his first 90 minutes for the U-18 side this season, and the game also marked the debut of Carlos Barra.

“Having started on the left of a midfield three, Carlos moved into the middle of the three after Dominic’s injury.

“He didn’t look out of place in there, got on the ball and passed it around well and contributed to a good team performance.
