Rovers 1-0 Oxford

Bristol Rovers’ Under 18s got their league season underway last weekend with a 1-0 against Oxford United.
A single goal from left back Danny Greenslade in the second half of the matchwas enough to take all three points for Rovers.
Acting U18s manager Marcus Stewart was pleased with the effort and performance from the side, made up largely of first year scholars.
It is a very different looking side from last season, with a number of second year scholars either being given professional contracts or released from the club.
Marcus told “This is the first time I have seen them play a competitive game, and they applied themselves very well.
“We had a lot of opportunities to win the game, and Matt Macey only had one save to make right at the end, which helped us secure the win.
“When you miss a few chances you always worry there is going to be a sucker punch that will get you, but we kept our discipline and I think we deserved the win.
“It is nice to win, but it is not the be all and end all at this level. It is good to create a winning atmosphere, but they have to learn how to lose as part of their development.
“We have a lot of first year scholars and trialists in the side and they are
getting to know each other.
“We do not have enough second years at the moment, but it is giving these first years the chance.”
